Concentration

What is the central idea behind your concentration? (500 Characters maximum)

The central idea behind my concentration is text emphasis. I really wanted to imitate the style of many Islamic calligraphy art pieces because the Arabic language has always fascinated me. The language by itself is so beautiful and eye catching. I also made use of various stencils to create beautiful patterns because Islamic art makes use of many patterns. I made the patterns small so they’re present without taking focus away from my text. There is no other art piece in the world with this text and no one but me will ever know if it says something or not. That in itself is the beauty of it because it’s sort of poetic. People can see the mood of each piece by the colors, brush strokes, and look of the text. But no one knows the story behind that mood.

Explain how the work in your concentration demonstrates your intent and the exploration of your idea. You may refer to specific images as examples. (1350 Characters maximum)

Every piece I made has a great use of text as the focus. In the past, I created pieces with real Arabic quotes as the focus of them. What makes these pieces different from my older ones is the research I did to make them more accurate to Islamic calligraphy. The first 6 pieces I made are very similar in composition and text because they were made previous to my art research. The first 6 resemble the text and style of Hindu art more than Arabic because I mixed up the cultures before I did my research. The next three pieces are very Arabic art inspired. Arabic calligraphy was my inspiration because of how eye catching and popular it is in the middle east. One thing composition-ally that I did correctly for almost all the pieces was centering.Arabic art is very centered and  known to have a great use of pattern.I chose to do made up text instead of actual Arabic though because I am not a professional in the Arabic language. In addition to that, it isn’t my place to claim a language for my art that is not a part of who I am. Creating my own text for each piece is my way of making it more personal. My seventh piece is still my favorite. The colors work really well together and the text came out sharp. The purple makes the white really pop, which then in turn makes the black on the white really pop as well.
